The São Carlos Institute of Chemistry (IQSC) at USP will be a protagonist in the training of qualified human resources to face the Covid-19 pandemic and participation in topics related to typical endemics and epidemics in the country. The training will take place within the scope of the Stricto Sensu Graduate Programs   offered by the Unit.

Participants will join the Covid-19 Metabolomics and Diagnostics Research Network (MeDiCo) USP / CAPES, recently approved in the call for proposals for the prevention and outbreak, endemics, epidemics and pandemics of CAPES emergency selection. The team, which has six multidisciplinary laboratories, will receive researchers from Brazil and abroad who will work in the areas of diagnosis and molecular markers for different pathologies. The first and most urgent to be researched will be Covid-19, opening the possibility for new PhD students and Post-Doctoral researchers to receive scholarships to work with the group. Interested parties should send an email to  projetomedico@iqsc.usp.br indicating interest and attach a copy of the updated Lattes curriculum. If selected, the MeDiCo Network will contact you.

The Network Coordinator, professor Frank Crespilho, says that the team will be responsible for training the new generation of researchers who will live in a “new reality”. The professor, who is also Coordinator of the Bioelectrochemistry and Interfaces Group at USP and Vice-Coordinator of the Institute for Advanced Studies at USP (IEA), Polo de São Carlos, adds: “Everything is very new, the objectives and the way of working , but we are prepared and equipped with one of the largest state-of-the-art equipment parks in Brazil and the most important - human resources. Our students, researchers and technical team form an international team of excellence. We will have to adapt to the new normal and society can count on USP, because this is where the challenges are overcome. ”

Professor Emanuel Carrilho, Director of IQSC, comments that it was very important for the Institute to be included in this notice, since the research already underway and the new scholarships will make a difference for the training of human resources. Carrilho also points out: “IQSC's post-graduation is internationally recognized for training doctors of the highest level and several graduates of IQSC occupy leadership positions in the most diverse Brazilian institutions. I want to encourage all young scientists who want to work with us to send their resumes because, through the recent approved CAPES project, we can implement new quotas for Doctorate and Postdoctoral scholarships ”.

In addition to carrying out the project in the São Carlos laboratories, the President of the IQSC Research Commission, professor Daniel Cardoso, points out that the professors participating in the Network have international collaborations with Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Copenhagen University, and Yale University and adds that "IQSC researchers generally participate in exchanges with these institutions, that is, this will be a great opportunity to further strengthen the internationalization of our research".
