AREA OF CONCENTRATION: ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOPMENT

It aims to generate knowledge on an interdisciplinary basis aimed at sustainable development, and to join efforts in lines of research and training of professionals to operate in spatial areas with scarce natural and human resources and in increasing social demands in order to catalyze the longing for economic, social, ecological, cultural and spatial sustainability, which is essential for the autonomy, emancipation and solidarity with the people of northeast Brazil.

The following lines of research are available below:

1) SPATIAL PLANNING AND CONFLICT MANAGEMENT IN COASTAL ENVIRONMENTS

To develop researches for the conservation and recovery of the environmental systems of the coastal zones, based on: establishing a multi-interdisciplinary knowledge; elaboration of planning and implementation of environmental management considering the processes of occupation, the socioeconomic conflicts of communities and the governmental policies directed to the sustainable development (tourism, agribusiness, energy, irrigation, among others); to analyze the dynamics of the coastal environments and the conflicts arising from dialectical interactions between the socioenvironmental dynamics.

2) PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT OF SEMI-ARID ZONES AND NEIGHBORING ECOSYSTEMS

To generate multi-interdisciplinary and technological scientific knowledge and to study the potential of semi-arid zones and their neighboring ecosystems: geo-environmental dynamics, conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in productive activities, integrated protection of ecosystems and cultural heritage, implementation of mechanisms capable of mitigating or recovering degraded and desertified areas, integrated management of river basins, technological innovation in the context of drought and adaptation to climate change for the environmental planning and management strategy and design.
